Do You Think God Knows You?

These are precisely the words that not so long ago threatened to explode the very foundations of my belief in God. It was Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, who asked one of his visitors, who bitterly complained about the apparent indifference that God shows towards all those ugly worldly matters: wars, famines, cruelty, injustice, etc.
Now, let me ask you the same question: “Do you think God knows you?”
If your faith in God is alive and growing, by good deeds, austerity, prayers and spiritual studies, your answer will probably be strongly affirmative.
As for the non-believers, they possibly couldn’t care less…
Yet, it may surprise you all… but God doesn’t know you. At least in the “form” you associate yourself with.

And before you start jumping up and down, throwing abuses at me, consider what some of the most revered teachers of the modern spirituality said on the subject. But first, get your understanding of the word “God” right. Know this: the god you believe in is in reality, only an imagination of your mind. Said Sri Ramana Maharshi: “What exists in truth is the Self alone. The world, the individual soul, and God appear at the same time and disappear at the same time.” Yes, your concept of God, like all concepts, is seriously flawed – one more illusion you’re living with. Your idea of transcendent God, residing somewhere “up there” in heaven, and managing the worldly affairs, including your own that concern you so much, is false.

God-created

One of many things under God's "management"

Do you think that God created the world where He has to manage everything, from the explosions of remote galactic right through to the disappearance of a small insect squashed under the soldier’s boot, and including your own daily problems: money, health, love, etc.?

Worse still, for many self-proclaimed believers, God’s importance is directly proportional to the magnitude of life challenges they are facing. That’s right. When struck by fears, you pray and ask God for help. Or perhaps you only want Him to present you with a better husband or wife, bigger pay packet, or a nice and quiet neighbor?
And you hope that He will do the needful and set these things right, your way. Said Maharaj: “The God born of fear and hope, shaped by desire and imagination, cannot be the Power That Is, the Mind and the Heart of the Universe.”
Do you really think your perverted ways hold any importance for God?
Stop deluding yourself, find where and who God is, and you’ll know His nature instantly. All your prayers, begging and requests will be done with in an instant, for you’ll be having none of them.

Said Maharaj: “God knows you when you know yourself.”
For if you don’t know yourself, all your beliefs, the faith you subscribe to, the observances you follow, the religious doctrine that regulates your life, all amounts to nothing. Devoid of Reality, your spiritual life is dead. Instead of being a living saint, you are wearing a saintly mask over the face of ignorance.
When you rein your deceitful mind and make it quiet, the rays of Reality will appear. Then it will dawn on you that Immanent God is nowhere to be sought. He lives in you!
The Self is God, for you and all. The moment you realize that your body and your mind are merely a veil of ignorance covering your true nature, you’ll gain nothing; for there’s nothing to be gained. You have all already, for you are All. So where’s is the question whether God knows you?
You are God. Now begin to live like one!
