Even Spiritual Thoughts Have to Disappear from Your Mind!
Spiritual thoughts are highly valued by the seekers of spirituality who, as one of the critical benchmarks of their advancement, see them as a sign of “mental purity”. This concept however, is wrong. Realized Masters taught that the Natural State is characterised by the mind devoid entirely of thoughts. In other words, no room for good or bad thoughts; all of them are equally unwanted and merely represent a sign that Realization is not yet a fact. No matter how spiritually advanced the person concerned is, or rather thinks himself to be…
The Masters’ proclamation: “You are not the body, you are not the mind!” can easily be lived by, when all thoughts disappear. There won’t be any concepts, any “understandings”, or beliefs.
Said Huang Po: “If you would spend all your time – walking, standing, sitting or lying down – learning to halt the concept-forming activities of your own mind, you could be sure of ultimately attaining the goal (of Enlightenment).”
Because you think that you are a body, and that your mind is the essence of your existence, there are countless thoughts supporting this falsehood. Fears and desires are appearing from nowhere and demand your urgent attention. “Cogito ergo sum” sums up the set of beliefs that majority of humans hold as the undisputable truth. Acknowledging the existence of these thoughts, let alone giving them some credence, is all a mind needs to carry on with its duplicitous function. It rides on the common fear that to ignore the mind will make one mindless; meaning “rudderless’, defenceless and unfit to be called a human being. And whilst this kind of “logic” is acceptable to those determined to protect their human nature at all cost, the spiritual wisdom indicates otherwise.
Yes, you and I live as humans. But, our true nature has nothing to do with the human kind; be it a body or a mind. Therefore, to become what we truly are – to realize our real beingness, the Self, we must stop allowing the never ending stream of thoughts to perpetuate and support this, which is no more than a concept – our mind. Common belief is that our thoughts originate in the mind. However, upon close examination, it proves to be one more of the long list of falsehoods that our mind creates. Roughly speaking, you can identify two kinds of thoughts: “light” in their intensity that pass fairly quickly, and those of a relatively “serious” nature that keep on nagging you for days on end. None of them has any substance, none originates from Reality.
This can be easily proven. Whenever a thought appears, ask “it” one of these simple questions: “Where did you come from?” or “Why does it matter?” with the second one being more suitable for advanced spiritual seekers.
When you do it instantaneously, without allowing the thought to expand and feed on your mental energy, you’ll notice how quickly is shrinks and disappears. You have proved it to be unreal. Keeping the mind free of thoughts allows it to calm down. Spiritual thoughts, no matter how sublime, are no better than the ordinary ones and should be eschewed at all times.
Then, your mind will open to Reality. When asked: “If my true being is always with me, how is it that I am ignorant of it?” Nisargadatta Maharaj answered: “Because it is very subtle and your mind is gross, full of gross thoughts and feelings. Calm and clarify your mind and you will know yourself as you are.”
Can you think of a better Dhyana that emptying your mind and just being totally thoughts-free? That’s what the Masters mean when they tell us: “Do nothing, just be!” There’s no need to do “spiritual work”, to follow some spiritual path. You are THAT already, and striving for perfection will lead you nowhere. When asked: “To know perfectly, I need a perfect mind” Nisargadatta Maharaj answered: “A quiet mind is all you need. All else will happen rightly, once your mind is quiet.” You, the seekers of Enlightenment, consider his words before giving attention to the next thought that your mind throws at you. Let it fly away unnoticed, or it will take you one step away from your ultimate goal. No matter how close you are!
